Photographs for Austin local artist Hey Moon Ceramics
Back in November I went to hang out with my friend Lauren of Hey Moon Ceramics while she worked on orders of mugs and vases. We chatted while she worked and I remembered how much I loved doing pottery classes as a kid. The cool clay yielding under my fingers. My parents still have a couple of pieces created by my sister and I at the ages of 8 and 12. My favorites being my sister’s pair of clay flip flops, and a sculpture of the rotund goddess Venus whose saggy butt is sliding down the back of her legs.
Lauren’s technique is somewhat more practiced than my 10 year old aspiring potter self. And there were no saggy butts in sight while she worked at the wheel perfecting pieces. We only had 40 minutes to shoot but the late fall light in her open studio was perfect and we came away with some gorgeous images to show case her work and her process.
I really love that these shoots are so low pressure. There was no special prep, no outfit decisions - just the artist making art and the photographer making photographs, hanging out, chatting away.
